This may be surprising but I am a huge fan of the Fast franchise and have been since the beginning. I would actually say apart from Harry Potter it’s my favourite film series. I think they are films with great action but also make you really care about the characters. They really do give you that sense of family. That being said, I think this is my least favourite. Apart from the 3rd one (but I try to forget about that).
When it was first announced they would continue with the franchise I was slightly worried. Paul Walker was such a big part of its success for me and I thought the send off they gave him and closure it had in Fast 7 was a great way to end the series. However I came into this movie ready to be entertained and I was not disappointed. I know it has come a long way from the drag racing and features a lot more combat and guns. But I love that they still manage to keep it about the cars and come up with creative ways to utilise cars in the action scenes. This film is particularly epic for that. Plus we finally get a female antagonist and Charlize Theron is great.
I also love how they have managed to integrate the storylines, bringing back your favourite characters but without seeming stale.  However this storyline seemed slightly cheesy to me and didn’t fully grip me. I can’t seem to put my finger on why that is but I didn’t come out of the cinema feeling awe-struck and like I could drive my car so fast I could jump between two buildings (I don’t recommend that). I just felt like ‘oh that was a good film, whats for food?.’ I also feel like there is now too many comedic/silly characters and as much as I love the laughs, It feels like with this team they just couldn’t pull off these things. I must also say I am not a huge fan of ‘Ramsey’ (played by Nathalie Emmanuel) her character doesn’t really add much to the franchise and her acting seems weak compared to the others.
Overall I did really enjoy the film and have seen many people claiming its the best film of the year so far, so maybe I’m just over analysing. If you love the Fast Franchise you will love this and believe me ‘Brian O’conner lives on.
P.S. There is no post credit scene.
